I release INFOPLUS in .ZIP format. When I do so, I include an
'Authenticty Verification' (AV) check. If you have PKZIP 1.10 or newer, ALL
files should have a -AV after each of them while extracting, and when
finished you should see:
Authentic files Verified! # XNW068 Andrew Rossmann
If you get a different name and number, or no mesesage at all, you should
consider the files inside to be corrupt and possibly dangerous or infected
with a virus.
Any file that does not have a -AV shown while extracting is most likely a
BBS ad.
If an altered AV shows an ad for a BBS, please let the SYSOP know that
tampering with the AV, while not necessarily against the PKZIP license,
destroys the reason for the AV. If you see mine, you can be sure that all
of the files that show -AV while extracting are safe and unaltered.
If a BBS has added an advertisement to the .ZIP file, please let them
know that tampering with the insides of a .ZIP is just as bad as changing
it's AV!! Let them play around all they want with the master .ZIP comment,
but DON'T touch the insides!!
I prefer that INFOPLUS be distrubuted in it's original .ZIP format. For
use on USENET's comp.binaries.ibm.pc, .ZOO format is acceptable, although I
would hope that it could be distributed in .ZIP format. If you get your
copy via c.b.i.p, and wish to give copies to other people, please add a
note stating that it comes from comp.binaries.ibm.pc, and that a guaranteed
safe copy can be found on the boards listed in the documentation, in
addition to SIMTEL20 and other FTP sites.
